Today I started my day by sleeping in a bit, having breakfast at the hotel with George and then going for a walk. George took me down the hotel street in the opposite direction I have been going the entire time. The neighborhood is not touristy at all and contains only the shops that are absolutely necessary.
We continued walking in that direction and stumbled across the 2nd largest church in Cologne, St. Agnes. After wandering back towards the Rhine we came across a flea market which was really neat the see. There were housewares, books, toys, clothes, records/CDs, you name it!
In the afternoon I went to my colleague Stefan's home. He lives in Schlebusch which is a suburb of Leverkusen. I mentioned that I was hoping to watch the Formula 1 race in the office a couple days ago and he invited me over. I arrived at his house and met his wife, son and nephew. We watched the pre-race and race while the two kids played with LEGO. He is also on-call this week and received two incident calls from the Global Control Center. One of the issues was for a US server, so he handed the details to me and let me resolve it.
While there his mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and niece also stopped by. They live just across the cul-de-sac which is really nice. After the race Stefan grilled steak and potatoes on his new Weber grill. We sat on his patio and chatted well into the evening. I tried my first German beer...I know, two weeks into my trip, but I'm not normally a beer fan. This one was very good and the 2nd type Stefan's brother brought was even better!
I called it a night around 9pm and Stefan took me back to the train station for the short ride back to Cologne.
